It's been a busy past few weeks, closing my brick and mortar and making a full throttle jump into cyber space. So, I was feeling a bit sentimental this Silver Sunday as I rummaged through my stash of silver. Rifling through, it occurred to me that I have my grandmother's hands!
Yes, physically they are beginning to take the shape as I remember hers, arthritis is a family curse. But more than that....I realized I use her tools all the time. When I use the discarded family lace, curtains and even furniture and whatever lands on my doorstep. Whether it's assembling something, making an art piece, decorating or just using it as props for photographs....it's all comes from my grandmother's hands and the magic of the past.
Of course most of this is because, in our family there's a dialogue that goes something like this, "I don't want this anymore but I don't want to throw it out, what should I do with it (insert any family members name here)?" "I don't know (family member) just give it to Beth she'll find something to do with it"
Do you see how that goes?
But now I realize it was all for a reason, so that I could use these things, to create what I do and what I love.
Here's a few of those pieces in all their silver glory.
I think the most precious to me as far as tools go are her silver thread scissors and her sterling bluebird thimble. Gramma loves to "mend" things and these were her tools of choice.
Now I know some of you will cringe but, I have this silver plate tray that.once you put something on top of it, it becomes way too heavy to actually use and carry. I don't want to sell it, or get rid of it, and I can't give it to myself (ha ha), soooo it just sat and sat and sat for years. Needing a soldering tray, and of course, why should I be traditional and buy one or simply use a cooking sheet, I remembered the tray. So up it came from the basement into the studio and voila! the perfect soldering station, even holds the iron.
Happy Silver Sunday!
Thanks Gramma I love you!
Beautiful Silver! I love the thimble, so many memories and you must feel the love when you use it. Thanks for sharing your treasures.
ReplyDeleteHi Beth, no cringing here, what a perfect place to work, and so beautiful! I love the idea of your family knowing that you will utilize all their wonderful things. I'm excited to participate this Sunday. Have a wonderful weekend!
ReplyDeleteDebra
Beth, you have such an awesome and beautiful collection of silver! Those scissors are absolutely gorgeous and how special that they were your grandmother's. Truly a treasure as is the darling thimble.
ReplyDeleteI'm not cringing at the use of your silverplate tray . . it's been put to good use. You'll see mine tomorrow :) which has a useful purpose now as opposed to sitting in the china cabinet!
Thank you so much for hosting Silver Sunday! I'm enjoying seeing everyone's treasures.
((Hugs))
Marsha
Wonderful family treasures. The scissors and thimble are both just gorgeous. Great treasures. Hugs, Marty
ReplyDeleteOh, Beth. Such a beautiful post. Your grandmother's childhood photo is precious. As are the silver lovelies you have inherited from her. You are a wonderful keeper of the fineries and have even put them all to good use. The thimble is a real standout with its glorious bird design. Your photos are sterling! ~ Angela
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful post. I love your grandmothers picture and all the pretty silver things. But the thimble is wonderful.
ReplyDeleteHappy Silver Sunday, Beth and have a great week...julie
I love your post! I have soooo many things from family I just can't part with..I don't have a daughter sooo I'm trying to educate my three sons on the importance of the family treasures we have. Thanks to Silver Sunday my youngest found out that we indeed have some valuable pieces that he wants someday! Love the picture of your grandma! My "granny" was so special to me and she made all her own clothes because she was 6'2!! I have her thimble too..I'm going to dig it out and put it in a cloche or shadow box! Your grandma's thimble and scissors are just precious and beautiful! I'm getting my post ready for tomorrow! Miss Bloomers/Sonia
ReplyDeleteI have some family crafting heirlooms as well although not as precious as yours, and I cherish them and I love using them too. That's what they were intended for after all.
ReplyDeleteDitto to what everyone has just said. The thimble and scissors are outstanding! You must be so proud. I have a picture of my great grandmother. It's absolutely scary how much I look like her.

Intricate and delicate and oh so pretty! The old sewing snips are always beautiful but I have never seen a thimble like that. The bluebird is so pretty.
ReplyDeleteLove your silver -- but I LOVE silver. I want to participate in Silver Sunday and have linked my blog here but I don't know how to get my link here as a participant. Hopefully, you can help.

Beth, I think your Silver Sunday is a super idea. I hope you'll consider making this a weekly meme. Your post last week was so unique, but this week really touches my heart. I have a collection of small sewing scissors and other sewing items. I plan to share them soon. Loved seeing the ones you have from your grandmother. The little thimble with its own little blue bird is extra special.
ReplyDeleteWonderful silver pieces and such fond memories! Love your silver succulent garden too. Peace & blessings, Tammy
ReplyDeleteHi Beth, The scissors are gorgeous and the thimble is so sweet! How wonderful that you not only have all those family treasures but also use them! Much better than keeping everything in a cabinet. Your Silver Sunday actually inspired me to use more of my silver pieces :).
ReplyDeleteHugs,
Julia
I kept waiting for a Mr. Linky and then, I remembered ...on your sidebar! lol...I am so goofy sometimes.
ReplyDeleteThanks again for sharing your beautiful silvers and for hosting..

What beautiful pieces. The bird thimble I just love. And your story as well. What precious heirlooms including your spirit and your hands.
ReplyDeleteKathy
I just found you this morning through 52Flea. Love your Silver Sunday. I have a favorite silver piece I stood all day at an auction to get. Certain things you just gotta have.
ReplyDeleteLove your blog will visit often.
your silver is so lovely! great idea for soldering tray!
ReplyDeletethanks for hosting this event, i loved going through everyone's posts last week, and am looking forward to seeing them all this week. i love silver!
Your story raises buried emotions of my own sewing relatives. Two Grannys, one a seamstress, the other a quilter and Mimi-in-law a fabulous crafter. I so long to sit and soak in the the stories they could tell...yet time stops for no one.
ReplyDeleteI hope to partake in this meme soon. So happy I popped over from where ever I was before. Sometimes I get lost blog hopping. I really should drop some bread crumbs.
Warm Sunday Blessings ;-)
This post is just lovely! That bluebird thimble is so precious.
ReplyDeleteBeth, what a precious post...your grandmothers thimble and scissors are lovely, you are lucky to have them. I had to laugh how you end up with items that your family doesnt want, at least you put them to good use. That silver tray is not only a great idea but you look good while doing your soldering jobs. LOL. Have a nice warm silver sunday....
ReplyDeleteHi Beth,
ReplyDeleteWow, that is the most beautiful thimble I've ever seen! I don't sew a stitch, and I still think I'd have to grab it up if I saw it somewhere.

Oh Beth I LOVE the photo of your Grandmother as a baby! And her scissors & thimble are divine. I too loved anything that was my Grandmothers. Although, I don't have a lot of her things I love what I do have sooooooooo treasure whatever you have now or will get. GOOD LUCK with you cyber store. I was in an Antique & Design Mall for 15 years & closed it in 2008. I WANT to do a website! That is another goal for this year. And also, your silver tray for soldering is divine. Is that a Weller Iron? My favorite one in the whole world! Thanks for hosting Silver Sunday. Charlene
ReplyDeleteBeth what beautiful silver pieces, I was going to comment yesterday but after I read your post..I just couldn't...my Ita (grandma) loved to sew too and I have all her sewing treasures...some as simple as a lil piece of tissue with lil bits and pieces of left over threads...because she didn't believe in waste..I also have her thinble, it isn't as beautiful as yours, but it is a small well used silver thimble, that I remember her always using :) I spent yesterday thinking of her on the anniversary of her passing and your post was just beautiful...my eyes watered with happy memory tears...Thank you for bringing forth that happy memory of my Ita... I hope to join your wonderful Sunday Silver party next week :) Thank you for sharing such beauties. Besos, Rose
